Hino Valke aims for Comprehensive Victory as it turns 70 years

With a satisfactory start to the Currie Cup First division against the Border Bulldogs, the Valke have a good reason to take that momentum to its next fixture against last year finalist the Griffons. The Good reason is that the former Eastern Transvaal Rugby Union (now known these as the Valke) turns 70 years this year.

The Valke will take the field with the original Jersey. The long sleeve red Jersey will mark 70 years of existence of a Rugby Union based in the East Rand Ekurhuleni. The Fixture is a home away from home match that will take place at the Izak Steyl Stadium in Van der Bijl Park instead of the regular Barnard Stadium. The move is due to the fact that Ekurhuleni Municipality is hosting a music festival at the ground.

The 70 years of existence has created a rugby legacy we see today. Stars such as Bakkies Botha, Etienne Botha, Adriaan Jacobs Tertius Dou, Naas Rossouw, Piet Mathys, Jaco Espag and Eugene Meyer, to name a few are amongst the outstanding Rugby players to have represented the union. “The Valke proud tradition continues on Saturdays against the Griffons said Head Coach Rudy Joubert”, Who is looking for a much improved performance against a team that has won this competition twice in the last three years, and one of those victories came against Valke in 2014.

Joubert emphasises that starting the competition with a victory was very important to determine where his team is after a long and gruelling off-season training. “We need to keep focused and lift our effort level and cut down on errors that led to soft tries being scored against us last week, but the players know that it will take a good effort to win the game on Saturday said the Former Bulls Head Coach”. He has kept almost the same team that played last weekend except Andries Truter who injured his shin during a contact practise session.

Former Grey High School and Hooker Jan Enslin will continue as Captain. Thabo Mabuza’s solid debut sees him retain the hotly contested no 6 flanker position. The coach emphasises what he calls stability in selection which will ensure continuity and a better execution of the skill set that is required to win games.
