The Falcons Rugby Union was originally founded in 1947, and was previously known as the Eastern Transvaal Rugby Football Union.
After the 1995 World Cup, rugby was declared professional in South Africa, after which the Eastern Transvaal Rugby Football Union merged with the Vaal Triangle Rugby Union to form the Gauteng Falcons Rugby Union and are one of only 14 Provincial Unions in the country. The name Falcon’s was chosen based on the local wild Falcon indigenous to the Heidelburg area mainly because of its aggressive looks and survival instincts.
Since the name was adopted in 1998 the Union have establishment themselves as a strong contender in the world of professional rugby.
They have a proud history of rugby in Eastern Gauteng and have produced numerous quality players spanning over a period of 60 years. In 2006 the Valke were the Vodacom Cup Champions, the first Cup won in the history of the Union.
The Falcons Pty Ltd sits with a Board made up of the Commercial and Community annexes of Rugby in the Falcons Region. The Commercial arm, Falcons Pty Ltd, is responsible for the Commercial Exploitation associated with the Brand and the Operation of the Professional Rugby Team.
The Professional Rugby Team competes in 2 competitions in South African Rugby.
The Community Rugby arm known historically as the Amateur Union maintains the structure and development of the amateur rugby set-up:
•Amateur Provincial Tournaments
•Development and Transformation
•Clubs, Schools and Youth Teams
Based on the East Rand, not far from Johannesburg the Hino Valke had their last taste of cup glory in 2006 when they beat the KwaZulu-Natal Wildebeest
Alternating between various venues on the East Rand, notably Brakpan, Kempton Park and Springs, the Hino Valke (formerly Eastern Transvaal) has been known to cause the occasional upset against one of the "Big Five" provincial unions in South Africa. They act mostly as feeder union for the richer and bigger provinces, but thanks to a few very strong club sides, the Hino Valke always has a good crop of players to choose from.
